The village that decided to be beautiful
A hot spring village in the Aso highlands, rebuilt by its own innkeepers to look this way. One wooden pass opens the open-air baths of any three inns.
No train reaches it. No neon, no convenience store sign. Two dozen inns in dark timber, sharing their baths with each other’s guests by agreement since the 1980s.
From late December, hundreds of bamboo lanterns float light over the river each evening until ten.

THE CAVE
Shinmeikan
Stoop through a low mouth in the rock and the world goes quiet. Lantern light on wet stone, and heat that gets right into your spine.
THE BIG ONE
Yamabiko
Wide enough that the far end vanishes into steam. Lie back, let your ears go under, and listen to absolutely nothing.
THE FOREST
Yamamizuki
Down a road you'll swear is the wrong one. Then open forest, the river a few feet away, and no one else at all.
